Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Yoshihide Suga have met.
During the meeting, they reviewed the multifaceted relationship between the two countries and discussed recent global and regional developments, including Afghanistan.
During the talks, the two leaders reiterated their commitment to an independent, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region. This is the first personal meeting between Prime Minister Suga and Prime Minister Modi since he took office recently.
On the occasion, both the Prime Ministers expressed their commitment to the early and timely implementation of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project.
The meeting between the two leaders took place a day before the first summit of the Quad. The plant is part of four-way cooperation between Australia, India, Japan, and the United States. According to the Foreign Ministry, they have agreed to enhance bilateral security and defense cooperation, including in the field of defense equipment and technology.
The first meeting between the two Prime Ministers was cordial. Since Suga took over as Japan’s prime minister in September 2020, they have had three telephone conversations.
